Malaysia to become first country to develop credit recognition policy for online courses

Malaysia will soon be the first country in the world to develop a national policy on credit recognition for the Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) platform.

The Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA) has been given the mandate to implement the 'MOOCs plus credit recognition and transfer' initiative, which would enable all MOOCs courses from Malaysia and abroad to be registered into the Malaysia's MOCC platform and be given credit.

300 students to take part in iCGPA pilot project

Some 300 students from five universities will be involved in the Integrated Cumulative Grade Point Average (iCGPA) pilot project, starting next month.

Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said those involved were new students from selected programmes which usually had between 40 and 60 students in each programme.

 

The iCGPA is one of the initiatives under Shift 1 of the Malaysia Education Blueprint 2015-2025 (Higher Education) also known as the Higher Education Blueprint which was launched in April 2015.

Master language to stay competitive, says deputy minister

KUALA LUMPUR: Lose English and lose the competitive edge.

Newly appointed Deputy Educa­tion Minister Chong Sin Woon said in order to compete globally, Malay­sia must embrace English.

 

“While it is true that English is not the most widely spoken language in the world (that honour falls to Mandarin), no other language is used more frequently by different speakers to share their ideas with one another than English,” he said when launching the Erican Inter­national English Language Teaching (ELT) Conference 2015.

A team of three students from SMK Subang Jaya emerged champion of the School Category of the International Medical University (IMU) Science Discovery Challenge. At the same event, a team from KDU College was the champion of the Pre-University Category. This inaugural event for secondary school and pre-university students is a quiz with questions from biology, chemistry and physics. It saw the participation of more than 110 teams pitting their knowledge against one another for the coveted first prize.

A steady rise for Malaysian varsities

The Government has put in place initiatives to strengthen the country’s higher education system, which is showing signs of improvements and soaring upwards.

Nine subjects were ranked within the top 51 to100 in the world across five of our public universities, namely USM, UM, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM). Coincidentally, these five universities hold research university status (RU), a project which the then Higher Education Ministry started in 2006. UTM has two in architectural and build environment as well as chemical engineering, while UPM and UKM have one each with agriculture and forestry, and development studies ranked within the top 51 to100 in the world.
